about

me

I live in the UK with my partner and children. If I'm not staring at the sea or walking in the woods, you can usually find me curled up with a book at home, drinking tea.

Seeking Evie is my first novel and I'm currently working on two others. I am a mum and, like most writers, I have a day-job, so I don't always get as much time as I'd like to focus on writing, but I do what I can!

You can contact me at hepburnilana@gmail.com or follow me @IlanaHepburn

Naïve sixteen-year-old Evie moves to post-war London with a head full of plans and a heart full of hope. Things do not go to plan and, betrayed by the people who should have protected her, she is forced to grow up suddenly. Traumatised and broken-hearted, she finds herself trapped in an abusive marriage and spends the swinging sixties in a dingy flat above a bookshop in the East End, writing letters that she never sends.

Seventy years later, Alice visits her estranged aunt’s crumbling country mansion and stumbles upon a long-hidden part of her family history. Diving into her family’s messy, complex past, she finds unexpected friendship in unlikely places. As Alice’s investigations shine a light on the dark truth of her family’s history, she discovers just how far people will go to protect the ones they love.

2023

in books

I have always been really bad at recording which books I have read and when - every year I mean to do it, but then when it comes to it I end up prioritising something else instead. This year I am determined to give it a go. I'm planning to list them here, as and when I finish them, just for fun. I have very eclectic reading tastes as I often read books that are lent or recommended to me by others, or that I pick up in second hand shops (thrift stores), as well as new releases when I can.

Ideally I'd love to do some book reviews, but this year is looking like it's going to be a busy one for my day job, and I'm hoping to publish two books as well, and most importantly, I'm a mum. If I do get a chance to do some book reviews I'll write them as individual blog posts and link to them here too.

  1. A Darker Domain by Val McDermid (finished 4th January - I love Val McDermid's books)
  2. This Must be The Place by Maggie O'Farrell (finished 8th January and feeling bereft!)
  3. Flow My Tears, the Policeman Said by Philip K. Dick (I used to read dystopian science fiction loads but this was the first time I'd come back to it since the pandemic!)
  4. V for Vendetta (my first ever graphic novel)
  5. The Janus Stone by Elly Griffiths
